Vettaiyan is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by T. J. Gnanavel and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah’s Lyca Productions. The film stars Rajinikanth in the lead role, alongside Amitabh Bachchan (in his Tamil debut), Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh, Dushara Vijayan, Rohini, Rao Ramesh, Abhirami and Ramesh Thilak. This movie has been released Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada.

Story

Athiyan is Superintendent of Police of Kanyakumari district and a renowned encounter specialist. With the assistance of Patrick, a thief turned informer, he has solved several cases by eliminating criminals. Following a tip-off from government schoolteacher Saranya, about drugs being stashed in her school, Athiyan eliminates the drug mafia in the district. Later when Saranya is raped and murdered in Chennai, Athiyan must solve the case and punish the perpetrator.

Movie Review

Vettaiyan starts off with a very promising moral question, an interesting point of debate between Rajnikanth’s character and Amitabh Bachchan’s character. The initial fight and story sequences are decently executed. But all the other characters other than Rajinikanth’s remain just an outline throughout the movie. There is no depth given to them. While story and plot points get interesting, the audience is bored due to the bland way it proceeds. and movie really dips after the interval. The good plot points that impressed in the first half turn into lectures from the characters in the second half. The repeated lecturing and the lackluster fight sequences really drag this movie down in the second half. The resolution given to catching the main villain also seems dragged on and convoluted.

The actors have done a good job with what they have been given but none of the characters other than Rajinikanth’s leave an impact.

The music is good but it does not save this movie.

The camera work is decent for the most part but the POV scenes seem unnecessary or just boring.

The dialogues are good but once the lecturing starts, most audience will be tuning out.

Verdict

While the first half of the movie is a decent story with a good setup, the second half drags this movie down making it a one time watch at best for Rajinikanth fans.
