Gopala Ratnam Subramanium popularly known as Mani Ratnam is a popular film director and also a producer in South Indian Film industry , who mainly works in Tamil Film industry (Kollywood) born on 2nd June in 1955 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.
Today is his birthday. He is completing 66.

His father S. Gopala Ratnam was a film distributor, who worked for Venus Pictures.
He did his Master of Business Administration in Finance from Jamaal Bajaj Institute Of Management Studies, Mumbai.
He was not interested in the films in his childhood.
He first worked as a Consultant in a firm, in Madras.
He made his directorial debut with the Kannada movie titled ‘ Pallavi Anu Pallavi’ in 1983. He won the Karnataka State Film Award For the Best Screenplay for this film.
His Tamil Film titled ‘ Idaya Kovil’ released in 1985 was his first box office success.
Later he directed many movies.
He is also a producer and made many movies under his production company ‘Madras Talkies’.
Later he directed many block buster movies like ‘ Nayakudu’ (1987) with Kamal Haasan in the main lead,Gharshana (1988) with Prabhu and Karthik in the main leads. Geethanjali (1989) with Nagarjuna Akkineni in the main lead, Anjali (1990), Dalapathi (1991) with Rajanikanth, Mammootty in the main lead and many more.
He was honored by Government of India with ‘Padma Shri’ for his contribution to films.
He is married to popular actress Suhasini .
