“Hi Nanna” is a Telugu-language romantic family drama written and directed by Shouryuv and bankrolled by Mohan Cherukuri, Dr. Vijender Reddy Teegala, and Murthy K.S. under Vyra Entertainments. The film stars Nani, Mrunal Thakur, and Baby Kiara Khanna in the lead roles, with Priyadarshi, Jayaram, Nassar, Angad Bedi, and Viraj Ashwin in supporting roles. The film’s music is composed by Hesham Abdul Wahab, cinematography is handled by Sanu Varghese, and editing is done by Praveen Anthony. The film was initially scheduled to release on the 21st of December but was preponed to the 7th, which is today. The trailer gave some glimpses of the movie, providing insights into what the movie is about. Now that the day is here, the movie is released, and let’s see how it turns out.

Story –

Mahi (Baby Kiara), suffering from a rare lung disease, is the daughter of Viraj (Nani). She lives with her father and is unaware of anything about her mother. Mahi consistently asks her father to share stories involving a mother character, but Viraj always narrates stories without one. However, when Mahi insists, Viraj makes a deal, promising to tell the story only if she achieves first rank in her class. Mahi successfully secures the first rank, prompting Viraj to share the story of her mother reluctantly. The narrative unfolds to reveal the reasons behind her mother’s departure and why she left Mahi. The role of Mrunal Thakur in this drama forms a crucial part of the rest of the story.

Analysis –

“Hi Nanna” is a touching story about father–daughter, mother-daughter, husband–wife relations, filled with emotions. Nani, who played a dad before in “Jersey,” does a great job as a single parent in this one, living up to his nickname “Natural Star Nani.”

Even though the movie is called “Hi Nanna” (Dad), it’s really more about the mom. The love between the husband and wife (Nani and Mrunal Thakur) and the bond with their daughter (played by baby Kiara) are well shown. However, the same strong emotions are missing in the relationship between the father and daughter, despite some good scenes.

There are laughs in the movie, especially from the daughter and Pluto. However, the story’s twists are easy to guess, and a song with Shruti Hasan feels out of place. The flashbacks have emotions, but they could have been deeper. The director shows that the daughter, Mahi, has a health issue, but it doesn’t feel serious until the end.

The film has a nice look, with cool visuals, but the story moves a bit slowly and some parts could have been shorter. The director tried to mix in funny moments with the cute daughter and Pluto, Viraj’s dog. It’s good that they added some fun elements. Props to the director for sticking to his idea, and the producers for bringing it to us.

While the story is good, the way it’s told could be better. Despite this, the movie has funny and emotional moments, thanks to the good characters and the director’s unique vision.

Highs –

  • Relations and emotions are effectively portrayed.
  • The last 30 minutes of the movie are impactful.
  • The music by Hesham Abdul stands out and complements the narrative well.
  • Good songs add to the overall experience.
  • Strong production values and neat cinematography contribute to beautiful frames.

Lows –

  • The plot loses its momentum.
  • Slow narration affects the pacing.
  • Predictable twists lessen the element of surprise.

Technical Aspects-

Hesham Abdul’s music really stands out in the movie, blending perfectly with the story. The songs are good too. The production and cinematography are impressive, creating beautiful frames. However, the director, despite being a debutant, didn’t quite nail the emotional drama. The movie moves slowly, and there aren’t many high moments, except for a few emotional scenes. It feels a bit half-cooked, and maybe a better narrative and dialogues could have made it more effective.

Verdict –

“Hi Nanna” weaves a touching narrative of family relationships, with Nani shining as a single parent. Despite a slow pace and predictable twists, the film manages to evoke both laughter and emotion. While it falls short of perfection, it’s a heartfelt endeavor with moments of charm.
