Raayan is a 2024 Tamil action thriller, written and directed by Dhanush, produced by Kalanithi Maran under his Sun Pictures banner. The movie has stellar cast which includes Dhanush, S.J.Surya, Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, Selvaraghavan, Prakash Raj, Dushara Vijayan, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Aparna Balamurali. Story
When Raayan’s parents go missing, he has to take care of his 2 younger brothers and his little sister all on his own. He succeeds by working hard and finding odd jobs. After all of them grow up, a local gang war threatens to uproot their family again.
Review
Raayan’s slow build up to the violence is undercut by almost no build up to emotional twists, which confuse us and pull us out of the movie. The twists confuse us and do not completely convince us of the characters making these drastic decisions.
The cinematography is excellent and the music elevates the hype during the action scenes. The action sequences are shot well and while the action scenes are good, they are not brilliant enough to distract us from the jarring character arcs. The ending action sequence, which was supposed to be a cathartic and emotional conclusion, ends up just disappointing us.
All these glaring faults and confusing character arcs makes this movie an average watch, despite great cinematography and great character performances.
Conclusion
Raayan has many great aspects like it’s action, music and cinematography but it’s glaring faults in the writing keeps the movie from being a great watch, making it an average movie overall.
Verdict
It’s a one time watch movie for Dhanush fans, a weekend mass movie for the masses.
